Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Decorated Police Officer
Stephen Hugh Snyder, known fondly to many as “Steve” — passed away peacefully on June 4,
2025, in Littleton, Colorado at the age of 89, with his loving wife Karin by his side. A proud
Denver native, Steve’s life was a testament to service, courage, and unwavering dedication to
his family, his community, and his country.
Born on August 10,1935 , in Denver, Steve was the son of Clifton Hugh and Miriam Irene
Snyder. He spent his childhood in the warmth of a bustling family alongside his siblings
Charles Henry Snyder and Shirley Ann Liston. Steve attended Denver Public Schools,
graduating from South High in1953 and treasured his deep roots as a lifelong Denverite.
Steve discovered his life’s calling in law enforcement during a ride along with a Denver Police
Officer in the mid 1950’’s. He applied to the Denver Police Academy, was accepted and
became a Denver Police Patrolman in 1958, launching a distinguished career that spanned
nearly 26 years. His heroism and dedication became most apparent on the fateful night of
March 17, 1973, when Steve was sot three times in the line of duty but survived —an act of
extraordinary bravery for which he was awarded the Denver Police Department’s Medal of
Honor. Steve returned to duty six months after this incident, continuing to protect and serve
Denver neighborhoods until his retirement as a Sergeant in November of 1983.
Steve’s patriotism extended to military service as well. He served proudly for 26 years with the
Navy Reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant in Physical Security in May of 1995. After retiring from
the Denver Police Department, Steve continued his commitment to justice by serving as court
security for Federal Judges of the U.S. 10th District Court of Appeals. In this role, he built
friendships with figures such as now – Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch, whom he visited in
Washington, D.C. – a cherished memory for Steve and Karin. Retired from the Marshall’s after
17 years of service in 2013.
Steve’s working career was not over yet. In 2014, Steve became a Marshall at Fox Hollow Golf
Course. He worked two to three days a week until he finally retired for real in November of
2024.
Steve’s life was rich beyond his professional accomplishments. He was the proud, loving
father of four children; Diane Enslin, Donna Becker, Vicki Snyder, and Kenneth Snyder. He is
also the a grandfather of five intelligent, independent and loving grandchildren; Kyle Becker,
Patrick Becker, Nicholas Snyder, Stephanie Ying, and Sarah Boylan. In December of 1983, he
married Karin, the love of his life, and together they built 42 years of love, laughter, and
adventure. Steve greatly enjoyed traveling, visiting numerous countries including Japan, New
Zealand, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands and the Philippines. A passionate Broncos fan, he
was a season ticket holder for 45 years and cherished attending the 1998 Super Bowl in San
Diego when the Broncos beat Green Bay.
Giving back to the community was integral in Steve’s life. He was an active member of El
Jebel Shrine becoming a Potentate’s Aide and involved with the Sandblasters, Duffers and
Dragoman. A dedicated coach and sponsor, he helped shape young lives through Little
League Football and community teams.
Steve is survived by his dedicated wife Karin, his four children , five grandchildren and
numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his two siblings.
