In his teen years, Howard spent a summer living with his maternal grandparents and working on the Mathis wheat and cattle farm in Western Oklahoma. (operated tractor, built fence, mowed pastures and lawns, etc.) I was the oldest of his 5 Mathis cousins but not yet old enough to help. For me, Howard was like an older brother to follow and copy. I am pleased to say that no bad habits were learned, and I have admired him ever since. I also remember and greatly appreciate Howard's assistance with the funeral service for his Uncle, my father.
