Wilma Schuringa

 

Wilma Schuringa, age 94, of Denver passed away January 3, 2015. Wilma was born July 4, 1920, in Friesland, the Netherlands, to Rindert and Wesseltje (Vander Velde) Wesseling. Wilma was a teacher in the Netherlands. After immigrating to the US in 1950, she graduated from Calvin College and continued her teaching career in the Chicago area at Timothy Christian School and at Illiana Christian High School as a German teacher.

She married Philip Schuringa on June 12, 1954, in Lansing, IL, and they had four children. Wilma was a strong believer and a long-time member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church, Lansing, IL; and Third Christian Reformed Church, Denver. In 1970 Wilma received her Master’s degree in Spanish from Illinois State University, after which she continued at Illiana as a Spanish teacher.

In 2001 Wilma moved to Denver to be near her two sons. Survivors include four children, Phyllis Schuringa (David Novak) of Los Angeles, Hilda (Chris) Hardy of Schenectady, New York, John Schuringa and Glenn Schuringa of Denver; three grandchildren, Judson (Katie) Hardy of Redlands, CA, Jessica (Eric) Streit of Lebanon, NH, and Tyler Hardy of Atlanta, GA; two great-grandchildren, Sophia Streit and Finley Streit; three sisters, Elizabeth Wesseling and Hilda (Frank) DeBoer of Chicago, and Florence (Estéban) Paulín of Querétaro, Mexico; and many nieces and nephews. Wilma was predeceased by her husband Philip and three brothers, Joe, John and Pieter Wesseling.

A memorial service will be held Friday, January 9, 2015, at 11:00 AM at Third Christian Reformed Church, 2400 South Ash Street, Denver, CO. Friends are invited to visit with the family Thursday, January 8, from 6 PM until 8 PM at Bullock Mortuary, 1375 E. Hampden Avenue, Englewood, CO; or Monday, January 12, from 10 AM until 11 AM at the Schroeder-Lauer Funeral Home, 3227 Ridge Rd., Lansing, IL. A memorial service will be held Monday, January 12, 2015, at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Homewood Memorial Gardens, Homewood, IL.
