Virginia Elliott Kelly

We regret the death of our beloved mother, Virginia Elliott Kelly.  Virginia departed this life on October 13th at the age of 83.

She was born in Denver as Virginia Whitlock Elliott and grew up in Park Hill.  She attended East High School.  Before her senior year in high school, her family moved to a farm in Wheat Ridge.   She spoke of arising at 3:00 a.m. to candle eggs before going to class.  At the age of 16, she received a scholarship to the University of Colorado in the School of the Arts.

She was a dynamic member of the League of Women Voters and was an active and devoted member of the Democratic Party.  She belonged for a time to the Red Hat Society.  Always tireless in her support, she campaigned, canvassed and worked at the grass-roots level for many a deserving political candidate.

Passionate about the deserved rights of women, she championed freedom at every level, volunteering at great personal sacrifice to escort women in difficulty at Planned Parenthood clinics in Denver.

A lover of political novels, historical discourse, the classics and mystery novels, Virginia was unrelenting in her pursuit of and support of education and the arts.

She was preceded in death by a husband of special distinction.  Allen Lee Kelly was a respected educator with the Denver Public Schools.

Virginia bore four children, all of whom are living: Norden Mackenzie Kelly of Mountainair, New Mexico; Nora Virginia Kelly of Denver, Colorado; Sean Allen Kelly of Austin, Texas; and Thomas Howe Kelly of Bozeman, Montana.  She is survived by one grandchild: Owen Elliott Kelly of Bozeman, Montana

She marked each of our lives with happiness, laughter and delight.

Instead of sending flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Planned Parenthood in Virginia’s name.

Memorial services will be held at the Bullock Colonial Chapel on Sunday, October 17th at 7:00 p.m.
