The Reverend Dr. Cecil Loyd Franklin

The Reverend Doctor Cecil Lloyd Franklin Cecil Lloyd Franklin entered into rest with his Holy Father on February 16, 2016. He was born in El Reno, Oklahoma on August 2, 1927, the son of Marion and Ellen Franklin. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clive and Benjamin. The family moved to Texas where Marion was in the U.S. Air Force. They later moved back to Lawton, Oklahoma, after his parents' divorce and his mother's remarriage to Edgar Thomas. Cecil attended Phillips College of the Bible, Abilene Christian College, and Harvard Divinity School, where he received a Ph.D. Later Cecil attended the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, was ordained a Priest and served as the rector of Christ the King Episcopal Church in Arvada for five years. After that he was Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Denver for twenty years, including five years as head of the department. In 1981, Cecil married Priscilla Wendt at St. John's Cathedral in Denver. After taking early retirement from teaching, Cecil volunteered at the St. Francis Center for fifteen years and served as a supply priest. Cecil and Priscilla spent most of the ‘80s and ‘90s travelling, with South Africa being their favorite trip. Cecil is survived by his wife of 34 years, Priscilla, and his children Catherine, of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Paul, of Santa Cruz, California. He is also survived by two stepchildren, Karin Clift and Stacey Gottlieb. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Women's Bean Project, the St. Francis Center, and St. Timothy's Episcopal Church.

I'm grateful to have been a student of Dr. Franklin at the University of Denver in his New Testament class, and to have been about to have several meaningful conversations with him later in life.
