Steve was born May 30th 1953, at Saint Luke's Hospital in Denver Co., the first of three children of school teachers Claire and Kyle Mitchell. Steve graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1971 in southeast Denver and then attended Western State College where he earned his BA degree. His college years were among his happiest times. After college he did some teaching and also worked in the paint department of Montgomery Ward and Guirys. He bought a little house, a bachelor pad, on Valentia St. where he had many friends coming in and out and where he met and eventually married Joy Spurlong in 1997. During this time in Steve's life he went back to college for his masters degree which qualified him for his dream job with the federal government as a drug and alcohol counselor. He helped many people. Joy passed away in 2009 leaving Steve and her two children, Debra Tuenge (Darrell) and Rob Furlong, and his son Jack whom Steve loved to play with.
In December 2010 Steve Married Karen Guy who has three daughters; Elizabeth, Judith,and Kimberly.
Steve was preceded in death by his father Kyle Mitchell and his step-father Charles Tulloh.
Steve is survived by his wife Karen, his mother Claire, brother Kent, sister Betsy, stepmother Julie Mitchell, step siblings; Teena Cooper, and Scott Williams, nephews and nieces (Betsy and Tim's children) Travis Branscom, Brittany Novotny (Steve), Qwist Joseph (Cara) Lacey Joseph (Dana), Aunt Aurora Mitchell, and many cousins.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Christ Episcopal Church, 615 4th St., Castle, Rock.
This has been a very sad week. My love goes out to Karen and all of Steve's family. May God's comfort and peace surround you.
