Ryan John West, aged 47, passed away peacefully at his home in Lakewood, Colorado on November 15, 2024.

Born on November 5, 1977, in Provo, Utah, Ryan was the youngest son of Lorraine and Layne West, and the fourth son of John Paterson. He graduated from Jordan High School in Sandy, Utah, and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Phoenix. Ryan proudly served as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard (2002-2004) and the U.S. Navy (2008-2010). While serving with the Coast Guard, Ryan was deployed across the U.S. in response to the 9/11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina. While serving with the Navy, he attended Seattle University School of Law and served a tour in Balad, Iraq. Ryan has since worked with the Department of Veterans Affairs and worked at & volunteered with a number of organizations focused on veterans services, homelessness prevention, and mental health.

Ryan was preceded in death by his parents, Lorraine and Layne West, and his favorite grandmother, Lola Wilcock. He is survived by his brothers, Noel (Eva) Paterson, Jeff (Jill) West, and Matt (Karen) West, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Ryan’s charisma and ability to talk to anyone, anywhere, at any time was on full display in the many places he lived, including Utah, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, and Iraq. He had deep connections with his beloved dogs, and you would always find a loyal companion by his side. He will forever be remembered.

Ryan will be interred at the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Colorado. We encourage all of those who loved and cared for Ryan to share your personal memories here, and to make a donation in Ryan’s honor to the National Veteran’s Foundation at https://nvf.org/

    • I am so very sorry for your loss, Noel. Had I known how to reach out to you sooner, I would have. I’ll look through my photo archives to find any pictures of Ryan I can share with you. We’d originally met in Seattle in 2006 during his first marriage to Emily, and I was involved with his Coast Guard colleague, Craig. Life happened, and those connections faded, but Ryan and I remained in regular contact. I am devastated to find out that he passed away almost a year ago. My deepest condolences to you and your family.

  1. I wish I knew you Ryan. I worked with your brother, Noel. Your picture conveys a kind hearted man with a big smile who would always be helping others before himself. Namaste ❤️

  2. Ryan and I met in 7th grade when he introduced himself by poking me in the back with a pencil.
Ryan, Josh Bos and I spent a lot of our high school years together going to concerts, playing basketball, snowboarding, and causing mischief (where Ryan was always at the helm.) Ryan was my best man at my wedding and was always supportive in my life.
He was a jokester and always made our time together laughable!
    I’ll miss you Westman!

‘Til we meet again pal, love you!

  3. Oh Ry Ry, I hope you see this message from above! I’ll never forget how you made me go to concerts, enjoy this tiny little town I moved to…. Most of all your compassion towards people less fortunate in this town forever changed me and you sir made me think about the world differently! I’ll never forget the small moments; our first dinner date (that was totally crashed because everyone knows me), how you cared for my dog at the end, helping me pack for a trip I was beyond stressed to take, dressing you in Seattle clothes living in Chelan! Most of all I’ll miss your smile ❤️ rest easy my friend.

  4. You are sorely missed, Ryan. You were such a beacon of inspiration & hope for me. A born prankster whenever the opportunity presented itself, which it did frequently. Whoever has the stolen painting from Seattle?! From our Mount Baker adventures to vineyard concerts, we had an instant connection. My heart sank when I realized something was amiss because you’d stopped responding… nothing has kept you from me before.. You were one of the truly good guys, and my life is exponentially better having known you. I send Clyde endless love & hope he’s in a happy home. See you in Heaven, fellow Scorpio xo
