  1. One of the best Sergeants I ever worked for. I was on mornings in District 2 for most of my first 6 years on the job and Russ was one of my Sergeants for about that entire time. He was also the acting Lieutenant most of the time as we went through about 14 Lieutenants during that same time period. He was always calm, cool, and collected no matter the situation and handled all of us in patrol fairly, quietly, with concern and was always teaching. If a situation came up we weren't sure how to handle he always started out with "how do you think it should be handled" or "how do you want to handle it". Then he would either say great do it that way, or he would propose problems with the way we came up to make us think up better ways to handle it. I don't remember a single time he ever told us how to do something without letting us come up with ways to handle something to get us thinking and making us think of both good and bad outcomes for our ideas. A true leader. He also wasn't afraid to back us up, both on the street and with upper command. He also had a great sense of humor and wasn't afraid to take a joke, or dish one out. He laughed a lot and enjoyed life a lot. I can say I truly enjoyed working with and for Russ.
