Richard M. "Dick" Scofield
April 4, 1938 ~ September 5, 2014
Richard Marion Scofield April 4, 1938-September 5, 2014 Richard Marion Scofield, otherwise known to most of us as, "Dick", was born to Clifford and Myldred Scofield on April 4, 1938 in the small town of Otis, Colorado with the assistance of a midwife. The family lived on a small farm west of Joes, in eastern Colorado. and that was where Dick went to school. He was an avid athlete, playing basketball, football, and track. He was also an active 4-H member, earning a trip to Chicago to the National 4-H Conference in 1954, after winning a demonstration competition (with his partner), at the Colorado State Fair. His high school graduating class of 1956 was the first class to graduate from the newly consolidated Liberty High School. He was always proud to be a part of that first graduating class, attending many all school reunions. The last reunion he attended was in 2013 at age 75. After graduation Dick went to the city, "Denver", and attended an electronics school, He worked several jobs including Sunstrand Corporation. During this time he met and married Corinne Peterson. They had a family of three children, Dennis, Marianne, and Mark. He later decided to pursue a career in law enforcement and attended the Denver Police Academy, graduating in 1964. Dick was very passionate about being a police officer, patrolling the streets about 5 years. Later he was transferred to the Crime Lab, where he was a Detective, focusing on photography and finger printing. Dick's family loved the mountains and decided to move there. They purchased a piece of land near Bailey, Colorado and proceeded, themselves, to build their home, while living in their pickup camper. Quite close quarters - for 3 little ones and 2 adults! But they had a good time. Their beautiful mountain home was their home throughout the kids' school years. In 1982 Dick met and married Carolyn Huxford. They lived in Lakewood until their respective retirements in 1989. They moved to the mountain home and became very active in the newly- formed Kiwanis Club in Conifer. They both served as officers in the club and truly enjoyed being a part of the group. Dick was a handyman and could fix anything. He even built, or reconstructed, three cars-a jeep that he used in the mountains and as a snow plow, a Bradley kit car and a 1954 MG-TF, which he purchased totally disassembled. They were beautiful cars which he was rightfully proud of. The MG is displayed in a private Museum in Denver today. He was "more than" an avid collector, mainly collecting guns and antique tools, which he displayed in his garage. Dick and Carolyn decided it was pretty cold in the mountains during the winter months, so they became official Arizona "Snowbirds". They truly enjoyed "going South" and meeting new friends from many parts of the country and Canada for 24 years. They enjoyed camping in their motorhome and also the trips they took with family members. Dick's health began to deteriorate four years ago, so they sold the home in the mountains and purchased a townhome in Denver in 2012. This past March they moved to a cottage at Dayton Place. Dick's Parkinsons/Dementia/Alzheimers diseases rapidly took over his mind and body and on June 1st Carolyn had to move him to the memory care unit at Dayton Place where he quickly became a favorite of the staff. Dick went to be with God and other family and friends on September 5, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford in 1998, Myldred in 1979, brothers Jimmy Paul in 1948 and Lee in 2004. Dick is survived by his wife Carolyn, his children Marianne (Tom North) of Texas, Dennis of Pueblo and Mark of Oklahoma, and step-children Steve (Katie) and Julie (Michael), both of Kansas; four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. He also leaves a stepmother, Frances, three sisters, Phyllis (Dale Steele) of Lakewood, Sandy (Albert Shivley) of Brighton, Nancy Jo (Bob LaPointe) of Boulder and numerous nephews and nieces. We know Dick would include everyone here today as his extended family. Memorial contributions may be made to: Sun Crest Hospice, 311 Steele Street #225, Denver, CO 80206 or The Denver Police Dept.
