After high school, Richard started working for the JC Penney company in Aurora Colorado. In December 1960, he met his future wife, MaryEllen Albers on a blind date. They fell in love and he proposed to her on December 31st that same year. Richard and MaryEllen were married on June 17, 1961 in Goodland, KS

In June 1963 Richard joined the Denver Police department.
