Dick was born in Waterloo, IA to Bruce and Velma Jordan Kirkpatrick. At age three the family moved to the Jordan farm near Monteith, IA and began farming.  At four Dick got his first horse, a Shetland pony named “Smoky” and thus began a life-long love for horses.

Dick attended a one room rural school in Monteith until the family moved to Grand Junction, CO in 1956.  A football player, wrestler and high jumper graduating from GJHS in 1965. Summers were spent on Glade Park at the King Ranch, working hard lifting hay bales, moving Angus cattle and sheep across UT & CO and wrangling up fun times.

 

He attended CSU, graduating with a Business Degree in 1969. He was a member of the ATO Fraternity.  Dick accepted a position with Texaco and moved to Wichita, KS before joining the IBM team in June 1972 and moving to Denver in 1974.  He  worked for IBM his entire career in sales, working in Denver, Grand Junction and  Cheyenne, eventually earning his position as IBM Senior State  Executive for CO & WY.

Dick fell in love with Patti Reeves in  1977 and they married on November 22, 1977 in Corpus Christi, TX.  Two young cowboys were born,  Jason Reeves and Tyson Jordan.

During these years Dick experienced all the activities CO and WY had to offer.  Winters were skiing and snowmobiling. Fall  was filled with many elk hunting trips. Summers were spent at the family property in Delta County with family and friends, fishing, ATV rides, numerous horse trail rides and pack trips into the West Elk Wilderness. A family cabin was established in 1963 by Dick’s father Bruce,  and ongoing summer projects have been managed by Bruce, Brother in-law Mike DerManuel and Dick.

Dick began his love of rodeo by competing for 7 years in the Wild Horse Race at Cheyenne Frontier Days in the 1970’s.  Additionally he served on the CFD contestants committee.  He secured and managed, for 15 years, a major IBM corporate sponsorship for CFD.  He and Patti successfully installed the first computers into the CFD rodeo.  Dick was also a member of the Elizabeth, CO rodeo committee for 15 years, as chute boss for timed events.

Patti sadly became ill with cancer in 2000 and passed away 2-13-2002 in Franktown, CO.

AT the NWSS  in 2003 Dick met Gail Andrews and they have cared for each other and shared life for over two decades.  Gail and Dick were married on May 1, 2023  and resided in Wheat Ridge, CO.

Dick suffered sudden Cardiac arrest at his home on July 9th2026.  He is survived by his wife Gail, sons Jason (Meghan) and Tyson (Charnel), 3 grandchildren, Mattie Jo, Hunter and Kelbi and sister Nancy Der Manuel. Dick will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.    A Memorial Service will be held on Sept.27,2026 at 1:00PM at Absolute Prestige Ranch,  1351 Q RD. Loma, CO.
