  1. Pete, born Petersen Brill Thompson, was a funny, mischievous boy. I am his aunt. His first name "Petersen" was after my father's last name. As a youngster, he took to wearing his clothes inside out. When asked to do a favor for someone, he did so with dedication. He was smart and handsome, and sweet. Pete's father David Thompson died at an early age from alcoholism. Sadly, much of Pete's life was spent dealing inappropriately with his mother's emotional problems. His mother's 4th-or-so-husband adopted Pete, and his last name was changed, adding stepfather's last name, Brody. As a teen, Pete self-medicated with drugs and alcohol and despite periods of sobriety, never freed himself completely from them. He was a devoted single father to his son, Kristian Gutierrez, who died from drugs within four months of Pete's passing. Both of them were living with Pete's mother at the time. In 2012, Pete's only other sibling, Ashley Elizabeth Thompson, born Elizabeth Jane Thompson, suicided from a combination of drugs while living with their mother and them. She left behind two young children. The children were removed from the family, and Peter lost contact with them, leaving him with only his mother and son as family. (His cousin, my daughter, kept contact with him via email, occasionally visiting him, but it was not a strong tie.) Although Pete and Ashley fought constantly, his sister's death weighed heavily on him. He tried desperately to get help for her when he found her comatose, but she succumbed en route to the hospital, as the story goes. Pete had many obstacles to overcome, and his continuing strife became too much for him. Had he been able to survive longer, he might have succeeded, but we will never know what good might have come from it. We will remember Pete.
