Resided in: Lakewood, Colorado

Mel Davis, 73, passed away February 18, 2025, at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado.

After being born in Colorado Springs on May 9, 1951, Mel spent his first three years on the family ranch 70 miles east of town. When his family moved back to Colorado Springs, they eventually settled on Ehrich Street in the west part of town.

Mel attended a number of schools in Colorado Springs and completed his GED. He was a member of the United States Navy from 1975 to 1977. He worked a variety of jobs, including construction for his brother, Marshall Davis, and his brother-in-law, Lawrence Hammitt.

Mel was active in the Alcoholics Anonymous community in Colorado Springs. No matter what meeting he attended, he always knew at least one person in the group. AA members have shared how Mel continued to help and befriend them after everyone else had given up on them. AA was a meaningful experience for Mel and he tried to pass it on to others. His sobriety day was June 13, 1980.

Mel was preceded in death by his mother Bertha Leona Mackey, his father Melvin A Davis Sr, stepmother Margaret Davis, brother Marshall and brother-in-law Lawrence. He’s survived by his brother Conn Davis (Denise), sister Marjorie Hammitt, brother Garry Davis (Mary), and nieces and nephews.

Mel’s family would like to thank the staff at Pikes Peak Post Acute in Colorado Springs and Lakewood Villa in Lakewood for the care they provided him this past year. Support from the Colorado Springs V.A., and especially Robert King, enabled Mel to live independently for several years, for which we are grateful. Dr Jessie Mastin and the staff of Bear Creek Dentistry always greeted Mel warmly, no matter how many times he had forgotten to show up for his appointment. It has truly taken a village to support Mel these last six years and everyone’s efforts have been appreciated.

Mel’s final resting place will be with his mother in Fairview Cemetery in Colorado Springs. A graveside memorial will be held later this year, date TBD.
