Mary Margaret Spaht Hunter Pigman born January 21, 1939 and concluded her remarkable life on earth on January 25, 2022. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt and trusted friend.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 32 years, Joe Pigman, daughters Holly Honn (Bill), Melissa Brooks (Dave), three grandchildren, Hunter Honn, Tyler Honn (Lacey), and Travis Honn (Emma). One sister, Marilyn Abrams and many loving nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her dear son, Gary Todd Hunter, her mother, Mary Gladys Burris Spaht Sharp and her father, Otto Spaht.

Mary was born in Shenandoah, Iowa and moved to Florida in 1950 where she graduated from Largo High School. She attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC.  She raised her three children in Florida, upstate New York, and Colorado. She spent her professional career at the Colorado School of the Mines.

After raising her children, she met the love of her life, Joe Pigman and they embarked on their life of adventure.

Together, they enjoyed bicycling. Some of their many trips included cycling through two-thirds of the Oregon Coast, a five-day loop across Southwestern Colorado. In Europe, they cycled through two week-long trips in Italy and one week-long trip through Portugal.

Mary climbed ten of Colorado’s 14ers.  She was an active member of the SkiMeisters as a downhill and cross-country skier. Mary and Joe skied into Walter’s Hut in the Tenth Mountain Division Trail System several times.

Avid travelers, Mary and Joe took two hiking trips through Switzerland and Northern Italy. They visited 33 countries together. They rode camels in Egypt, hot air ballooned in Egypt and Turkey, sea-kayaked in the San Juan islands, and trekked through Machu Picchu in Peru.

An accomplished sailor, she crewed with her daughter and family on multiple trips throughout the British Virgin Islands, and across the Caribbean and was one of the “Salty Dog Dames.”

Mary was a truly talented and artful weaver and enjoyed being with her group of fellow weavers, the “Wednesday Weavers.” She taught classes on weaving specializing in three-corner shawls.

She and Joe joined the “Top of the Rockies” Corvette Association and drove cross-country exploring the sites and attractions of the U.S. highways. She was a white-knuckling “Jeeper” and she and Joe loved playing in the San Juan Mountains and Moab.

Among all of her treasures, she counted her family and friends the most valuable. She lent her infectious laugh and bright smile and warmth to their many gatherings and loved to tell the stories of her travels with wonder and excitement. Mary lived a full life filled with adventure, love and laughter and leaves a legacy of beautiful memories and inspiration.
