Mary Cowen
June 14, 1924 ~ February 15, 2019
Mary Christine Cowen, 94, passed away on February 15, 2019. She was born in Denver on June 14, 1924 to William and Pearl (Argo) Marquardt. She grew up in Calhan and Salida. In 1945 she married Homer "HC" Cowen shortly after graduating from the Penrose (formerly Glockner) Nursing School in Colorado Springs. They moved to Denver in 1949.
Mary was a positive, happy, gregarious person and a friend to everyone she met. In addition to her homemaker's responsibilities, she worked as a part-time RN at several doctors' offices. She enjoyed playing bridge, golfing at Valley Country Club, needlepointing for Christ Episcopal Church, fly fishing, and water aerobics. She was active in PEO and Faculty Wives of the University of Colorado Medical Center. She and HC were also members of a waltz club.
She is survived by sons Ron (Dee), Bob, and Rick (Gloria); grandson Jeff (Crystal) and great-granddaughters, Adelyn and Emilia. She was preceded in death by her parents, HC, 2-day-old daughter Lynnette, and brothers John and Jim Marquardt.
Private family services will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to Denver Hospice, Dept of Ophthalmology at CU School of Medicine (Ophthalmology.gifts@ucdenver.edu) or an organization of your choice. The family thanks the wonderful caregivers, staff and medical professionals at Brookdale Meridian Memory Care and Denver Hospice.
