Margaret Romero

Margaret Romero, wife of Jose “Am” Romero, died peacefully on Saturday evening, July 27, 2013, at her home of nearly 60 years in south Denver.  Sadly she was preceded in death by her husband, Am, with whom she shared 74 years of marriage.  She was also preceded in death by her son, Charlie, and her daughter, Dorothy.   She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Crow (Bud) from Portland, and, Margaret “Jo” Chojnowski (Mike), from Gull Lake, MI, and Susan Brunson (Larry) who reside in Centennial and were her caregivers for the final years of her life.  Margaret was lovingly called “Nana” by her 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.  She doted on her family, especially the children, and was greatly grieved by the death of her granddaughter Melanie at age 29.

For 30 years, Margaret worked at Shwayder Brothers, later known as Samsonite.  She was a line worker and a sewing teacher, always taking pride in her job.  Margaret and Am attended St. Louis Parish in Englewood where she served on the Altar and Rosary Society and as a Eucharistic Minister.  Margaret was very outgoing, making friends easily and everywhere.  Her ready smile was nearly as famous as her special chocolate cake which she loved to share with her wonderful neighbors, who all watched over her as the matriarch of the neighborhood.

Margaret celebrated her 97th birthday in June of this year.  To the very end, Margaret tended to the lovely flowers in her yard, took walks with her neighbor, Grace, and always had a smile on her face for everyone she encountered.  She loved to dance - she and Am were the best dancers.  She also loved to party, and loved to laugh; her age, when she went to be with God and her Am, is testament to her love of life.  Always the luckiest at the play table, she was the perfect jester, sometimes even “making” her incredible luck during many games of Skipbo.  She will be greatly missed by her family, her neighbors and her friends.

Donations in Margaret’s honor may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 2200 S Logan Street, Denver, CO  80210.
