On February 21, 1954 he enlisted in the military and proudly served in the US Army for four years. While serving, he earned both a National Defense Service Medal for his skills as a sharp shooter with an M-1 rifle and a good conduct Medal. In August 1957 he married the love of his life, Shirlee Kay Moore. He became a Denver firefighter and soon they started their family. They welcomed their daughter Lori, son Brian and son Alan. He became a diesel refrigeration mechanic, a career which he would stay in and love until retirement. After retirement, he enjoyed golfing with his senior buddies, fishing and camping with his family and hosting poker and Nascar parties. He was beloved "Gramps" to 8 grandchildren: Erik, Leslie, Kacie, Desiray, Trevor, Adam, Cameron and Austin, as well as 7 great grandchildren: Bailee, Leyton, Gage, Madden, Elora, Aria and Elijah who were all "The apple of his eye".
