Born in: Clendenin, West Virginia
Resided in: Golden, Colorado

Lily Wray Ward, 84, passed from this earth on May 24, in Golden, Colorado. She was born and grew up near Clendenin, in the majestic West Virginia hills, up the Elk River from Charleston, WV.

Lily Wray was the third of Mark and Elsie Naylor’s four daughters, Sidney Louise, Mary Ann, Lily Wray, and Terri. After graduating with honors from Marshall University in Huntington, WV, she returned home to rural WV to teach home economics and biology at Herbert Hoover High School. She loved it! And her students loved her (as well as her white ’65 Mustang).

While Lily Wray was in college, a campus minister had urged her to combine her love for teaching with her love for God and other people. She accepted a scholarship offer from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, VA. There she was spotted by Russ Ward, a young preacher-to-be. But Lily Wray and Russ always thought that the best work they ever did was raising their two sons, Jon Mark and Mattison Taylor (as well as numerous dogs and cats, and especially her 5 beloved Welsh Corgis).

Jon Mark, and his partner, Tim, have a law practice in the Foothills of the Rockies near Denver. Matt works in IT at the University of North Carolina. Lily Wray delighted and watching Matt and his wife, Danielle, raise her beloved grandchildren, Riley and Cassidy.

This summer, Lily Wray’s family who have loved her so much will take her back to rest with her parents, Mark and Elsie, in the West Virginia hills, “so majestic and so grand, their summits bathed in glory like the Prince Immanuel’s Land.”

Lily Wray Naylor “Beautiful” Ward will be greatly missed by all of us. She graced our lives like no other ever will. Her sons were lucky to have her as a mother, and Russ lucky to have sixty years of wonderful memories. She leaves behind a smile like no other that always called us home, and always will. May we all carry Lily Wray’s gleam and smile in our hearts.

Guestbook

  1. Riss, so very sorry to hear about Lily Wray❗️ You are all in my thoughts and Prayers 🙏🙏🙏

  2. Russ, so sorry to hear about your loss of Lily Wray❗️You and your family are in my thoughts and Prayers 🙏🙏🙏 ❗️

  3. My partner Brent and I first got to know Lily Wray and Russ nearly 20 years ago on one of their many visits to Colorado. We liked them both from the very beginning. They were both so down-to-earth and sincere and genuine and accepting of Brent and myself. Over the years, we came to love them both. Lily Wray was truly one-of-a-kind. She possessed so many wonderful qualities that it is difficult to single out even just a couple. I remember two things in particular: The beauty of her soul and her fighting West Virginia spirit. I will miss her immensely. I last saw Lily Wray on Mother’s Day, and I told her then that she was like my “second mother“. That was so very true. And, now, if there is a Dairy Queen in Heaven, she is sitting there with my mother, Darel, having a great big soft serve chocolate ice cream cone.❤️❤️❤️🍦🍦🍦❤️❤️❤️

  4. Going Home

    Going home, going home
    I am going home
    Quiet like, some still day
    l am going home

It’s not far, just close by
    through an open door
Work all done, care laid by
    Never fear no more

    Mother’s there expecting me
    Father’s waiting too
    Lots of faces gathered there
    All the friends I knew
    I’m just going home

No more fear, no more pain
No more stumbling by the way
No more longing for the day
    Going to run no more

    Morning star light the way
    Restless dreams all gone
    Shadows gone, break of day
    Real life has begun

There’s no break, there’s no end
    Just living on
    Wide awake, with a smile
Going on and on, going on and on

Going home, going home l am going home
    Shadows gone, break of day
    Real life has begun
    I’m just going home
