Leonard Joseph Lockert

Leonard Joseph Lockert was born August 22nd, 1941 to Ruby and Joe Lockert in Lemmon, South Dakota. He spent his childhood there and attended St. Mary’s Grade School and Lemmon High School.

In 1958 at age 17, he entered the Army. Even though he was an excellent marksman, he was trained in the culinary arts program.  He and his first wife Thea from Germany, had one daughter, Cindy.  Nearly 12 years later, he married Helen and adopted and loved her daughter Celeste, as his own. Together they were blessed with another daughter, Kimberly.  In 1980, he met Carol Wise and gained another bonus daughter, Sonja.  The three of them moved to Colorado where Carol would bear him three more children; Ruby, Leonard Jr,  and Leah.  Three years before his death he was delighted to meet another precious daughter Belinda. A total of eight would be privileged to call him “father”. He also was a very supportive and loving presence in the lives of his grandchildren: Tomo Jr, Jaden, Kiana, Nathan Jr, Niko, Tialani, Annabella, Sebastian, Alexander, Sienna.

Leonard enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, rock climbing, and playing music with family and friends.  He was a skilled guitarist who taught himself to play at age 12.  His adventurous spirit would take him from being a Champion Skydiver in Hawaii to operating a 35 foot commercial fishing boat in Alaska.  He was also a Master Stonemason and created a successful business building, restoring, and weatherproofing buildings.  He even built a tombstone out of petrified wood for his parents and brother in Lemmon. He then left that to raise his children in various places throughout Colorado.  The rest of his days were spent loving his family the best way he knew how.

God brought Leonard home at 9 AM on February 16th, 2022 at the age of 80.  His passing leaves a deep hole in many of our hearts.  It is with great sadness that we reluctantly say goodbye. Perhaps, in these troubling times, God needed his infectious smile and quick-witted humor in Heaven.

He was preceded in death by his brother Arthur, sister Joanne, daughter Cindy, as well as two of his wives, Thea and Carol.

He is survived by his older brother Larry Lockert in Colorado, his younger sister Dianna Johnson in Montana and his children: Celeste Lockert in Wisconsin.  Kimberly Jandron in Wisconsin, Sonja & Tom Frerking of Rapid City, SD, Ruby Lockert in Aurora, CO,  Leonard Lockert Jr in  Denver, CO, Leah Lockert & Matt Brosius in Colorado Springs, CO,  and Belinda Parish in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Leonard was blessed with many grandchildren: Daniel, Emili, Haley, Cassidy, Samantha, Alexandria, Talon, Zach, Tiffany, Brianna, Makayla, Sierra, Tomo Jr, Kiana, Niko, Tialani, Annabella, Alexander, Jaden, Nathan Jr, Sebastian, and Sienna. He also had six great-grandchildren: Bexley, Apollo, Natalie, Madelyn, Ellie, and Miles Leonard.

  1. Dear Leah,
I'm sorry I couldn't come but wanted to send a message. This Bible verse is one of the best known but so appropriate for today. God Bless, Pam MacIver (Amy's Mom) and friend
    Hugs
    John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believe in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Dear Lord, be near Leah and her family as they celebrate the life of their father Leonard. I ask that you comfort their grieving hearts. In Jesus name, Amen.
