Laura Cordova
January 26, 1916 ~ August 10, 2012
Laura Nuanes Cordova died at her home on August 10, 2012 at 96 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband, Toby Cordova, who passed away 42 years ago on December 4, 1969. She is survived by her 7 children; Lucille Strauch, Stanley Cordova, Sandra Brannan, Lucinda Meyers, Anthony Cordova, Anita Duran, and Veronica Cordova. Laura had 12 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Mom was born in Aguilar, Colorado on January 26, 1916 to Guadalupe and Felisita Nuanes. The family moved to Denver in 1920 when Mom was 4 years old. She only attended school until the 6th grade, but she was the smartest lady I ever knew. At the age of 13, Mom began working, cleaning homes for Jewish families in Denver. At 15, she began to work out in the fields. At age 17, Mom worked at the Savery Mushroom Farm on North Federal, now a historic Westminster landmark. It was there that she met our dad. Mom always said that she did not like him at first, but that eventually, he stole her heart. Mom and Daddy were married on April 15, 1936 at Sacred Heart Church in Denver. When Daddy passed away in 1969, they had been married for 33 years. Mom never did remarry, however she was hardly ever alone. She was always busy raising children or taking care of someone in the family. Mom was a wonderful cook and she always trying new recipes. In her younger years, anytime she had visitors to the house, Mom would always hurry and put on her apron and whip up the best dinner for them. We all loved her tortillas. They were the best. One of the things that Mom always loved was being outside in her yard. When she was able to, she was out in her yard, on her knees, planting flowers and pulling weeds. After a long day of yard work, Mom would come inside and say, "I'm going to take a shower and drink a few tonics so I can sleep good." Mom also loved the birds in her yard and she always made sure that she took care of those birds. She made sure that they were always fed and that they had water in their birdbath. As Mom started to get older and slow down, she would still go outside and nap on the porch, or she would simply sit in her kitchen and watched the birds outside through the window. When we lost Mom, my niece said that there was a hawk flying above the house. We know that Mom has gone home to be with Daddy. She went in her sleep and she will no longer be in pain. Although she is no longer on this earth, we will always have her in our hearts, so she will never truly be gone. We love you Mom. Tell Daddy "Hi!" for us! -Laura Cordova's Children
