I loved John as a brother! We were partners for several years in the robbery unit. But we were much more than friends, we were family. We had many great times together but also hard times. We laughed and cried together. We were there for each other during the loss of beloved family members. Karen and I spent time with John, Betty and family on many occasions before Betty's passing. We enjoyed many nights at Conville's Pub singing Karaoke and just enjoying each other's company with friends. As my partner in the robbery unit, I credit John for saving my life one night. We were on a stake out one night for a robbery suspect who was robbing people as they were making bank deposits at night. We spotted the suspect and a short car pursuit occurred. When we confronted the suspect I had accidentally dropped my gun getting out of the car. John was driving and had kept his gun on the suspect ordering him not to move. When I was finally able to retrieve my gun we were able to take him into custody. We retrieved a sawed off shot gun right next to him. If John hadn't kept the suspect from moving, I know the suspect would have killed me with the shotgun. John was a great Detective! I'll never forget the day I made Sergeant and John started crying because we were no longer going to be partners. Well John Humphrey, you will always be my partner for life. I love you brother.
I'm sorry to hear that John has past on. He was a character straight out of TV police shows who had an excellent rapport with suspects and usually got the confession needed to make the case. The office morning wasn't complete until he asked to no one in particular, "Where's lunch?" Lunch was a very important part of the day. At times he'd lose patience interviewing so called "victims" on the phone and the other guys in office would start to laugh as he got red in the face yelling at the "victims" but calmed down afterwards and laughed at himself. We all loved to hear John's stories of his gambling trips to Las Vegas and how his favorite casino would comp his stay. When John retired(its hard to believe its been 21yrs), the office wasn't the same…..he definitely added "life" to the Robbery Office and he was missed!! Enjoy your reward John, with Betty and your son.
John, where did the time go…memories of class 75-1. Always a hoot to talk with. See you pal, Rest In Peace.
I have such great memories of John, his wife Betty and their kids and extended family. We spent so much time together that they felt like our extended family. From our weekly Karaoke outings at Conville's Pub to vacations on a Bahama cruise and trip to LaCrosse, WI golfing and partying with his family and friends there. So many wonderful memories and times together. I thank John for having my husband's back while working in Robberies. I got a little more rest at night knowing he had a great partner and best friend. I will always be thankful for having you in our lives – and all the great times we had. I feel truly blessed to have known and loved our friendship. Rest In Peace my friend and give hugs to your beautiful wife Betty and beloved son Dan. 🙏🙏🙏💙💙💙😇😇😇
John was an all-round nice guy and good policeman. I remember him working weekend nights off-duty at the La Fiesta, 23rd and Champa, which generated at least one "officer calling for help" call each weekend. John made many contributions to the Department and City and will be missed.
John and I were partners for a time in the Robbery Detail. John was a good policeman, and a good detective with a great sense of humor. John was a better friend. During our time together, both on the job and after, we both endured some of life's most troublesome burdens. Several times during those struggles John would tell me that when he got to heaven he wanted to be on my side. Well John, now that you are there with Betty and Danny, say hi to Steven and save me a spot.
