Joan Sandra Cattanach

Joan Schlenker Cattanach, 91, of Northglenn, CO, died January 23, 2018.
She was born on July 3, 1926 in New York City. She rode the NYC subway to and from
the Little Red School House and always carried a subway token in her shoe for the fare.
She attended Oberlin High School in Oberlin, OH and graduated from the National
College of Education currently at National Louis University, in Evanston, IL in 1949 with a
Bachelor of Education degree.
Joan married Alexander Ralph Cattanach on June 10, 1949. They originally lived in
Chicago where their first son Bruce was born. They moved to the Denver Colorado area
in 1953, in suburban Lakewood where her other two sons were born. They were
divorced in 1968. She continued to raise the children to adulthood.
Joan taught kindergarten in Lakewood area public schools from 1960 until 1978. During
the summers, she gave swimming lessons at various public pools around Lakewood.
She travelled the world widely with Ports of Call, Denver based travel club. She
maintained a globe with stick pins in all the places she visited.
She is survived by her 3 sons, Bruce (Jackie), Glenn (Carol), and Gregg (Paula), two step
grandsons, Andrew & Michael Soens, nieces, Linda (Harold) Seitz, and Bonnie (Creede)
Hinshaw and grandnephews Jess, Jeremy, Jacob Hinshaw.
She is one of the longest standing members of the Jefferson Unitarian Church in Golden,
CO, being a member since 1961. A memorial service is planned at the church June 2,
2018.
