James Elmer Seiler

September 22, 1946 ~ November 17, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of the Honorable James E. Seiler, affectionately known as Jim, who departed this life on November 17, 2024, in Lakewood, Colorado, at the age of 78.
Born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, Jim was the son of Margaret (Mader) and Elmer Seiler. His upbringing instilled in him a strong foundation of values and work ethic that guided him throughout his life. He earned his undergraduate degree in History from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he met his future wife, Sonia, in a Spanish class taught by her sister—a meeting that sparked a lifelong partnership spanning over 50 years.
Jim began law school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison but paused his studies to serve in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, he was joined by Sonia, and together they created cherished memories abroad. Upon returning to Wisconsin, Jim completed his law degree and embarked on a distinguished career. He practiced privately before transitioning to roles as internal counsel for a bank in Minnesota and later a manufacturing firm in Missouri. He concluded his professional journey as an administrative judge with the Social Security Administration in Missouri & Arizona. Jim dedicated himself to his community and fellow veterans through active involvement with the American Legion, Post 133, in Huntington Beach, California as the Historian. His contributions were deeply valued by all who knew him.
After retiring, Jim planned numerous international vacations to see more of the world. These always created the some of the best stories later exaggerated by his daughter Becky for comedic effect. This last year alone included a cruise to the beautiful destinations of Capri, Sicily, Sorrento, Montenegro, and Croatia. Also, adventuring through Alaska with some dear friends, and visiting Colorado numerous times, one of which was to white water raft with his family.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife Sonia; two daughters, Becky Seiler and Nina Seiler (Jeff Stroot); and three grandchildren—Ryan and Capri Nagy, and Acacia Stroot—who brought immense joy to his life. He was a very dedicated father and an adored grandfather to which he had endless energy and advice. “Papa” was a fan favorite due to his inability to say “no” to the grandchildren and, of course, his loving spirit.
Jim’s life was marked by service to his family, country, and community. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps; he will be a tough act to follow.
His final wishes were to be interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
