Hazel J. Counterman
Hazel (Checkas) Counterman was born May 7th, 1920 in Louisville Colorado to William and Jane Ann Checkas. She graduated from Louisville High School in 1938. In 1943 she went to Washington DC where she worked for Navy personnel. Due to her mother’s ill health she returned home to Colorado. She worked at Remington Arms and Kaiser Industries. When the war ended she went back into Civil Service and worked for the Agricultural Department. In 1948 she met Clarence Counterman on a blind date. She and Clarence were married May 6th 1950. To this union three children were born, David, Mark and Brian. Hazel resigned from civil service to stay home and take care of the boys. She again went back to work and stayed in Civil service until 1983 when she retired. She and Clarence bought a 5th wheel trailer and traveled every January, February and March to Texas, California and Arizona. When Clarence’s sisters needed help they stayed home to take care of them. Clarence loved to golf and Hazel liked to travel, read books & water exercise. Hazel became ill in 2005 & 2006, so they sold their home of 50 years and moved to assisted care centers. Clarence died in 2011 at age 89 and Hazel still resided at Porter Place at the time of her death on October 21, 2012. Hazel is to be buried alongside Clarence at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
