Grady Wallace Perkins
Grady was born on a diversified farm in Mentone, Alabama on July 11, 1923. He died on May 10, 2015.
Grady was drafted into the Army Air Corp at 18 years old, then after boot camp was shipped out to Leicester, England. He started as a navigator in a B17, soon to be co-pilot and pilot. After the war was over, he came home to the farm in Alabama for a few weeks and attended the University of Illinois and Northwestern to study oil law. He next worked his way up the ladder in the Ohio and Illinois oil boom. He then went to Colorado and Wyoming as an independant wild cater.
In the early 60's, Grady married a school teacher from Nebraska and they started a family with Grady Perkins II, and helped raise several foster boys, brothers & nephews. At this time he also decided to follow his father's footsteps and start raising registered horses and cattle. His horse and cattle business spanned over five states and he served on countless boards in the horse and cattle business. At 89, he still drove himself to Riverside Baptist Church on Sunday and even went to Wyoming to do one last oil deal. He is survived by his son Grady Perkins II, foster son Ed Imig, brother Moris Perkins and nieces and nephews along with many friends.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 12:30 PM at Fort Logan National Cemetery. (Staging Area "B")
Thanks so much to Ed for contacting me. We never met or visited on the phone but I had been tracking you down for some 15 years now. Spoke with Doris and Morris about a year ago. So much Perkins' history I want to know. So many stories not wrote down, pictures and letters unseen. So many lessons learned and not passed down to generations to come. We live in TN now and so close to the home place in Mentone and Valleyhead, AL. Maybe your dear friend Ed can share campfire stories with us on the Perkins family. You will be missed…….thank you for your service to our county. Hope to learn more about you Grady Perkins. May our God give peace and comfort to your loved ones remaining behind.
