Born in:
Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Resided in:
Highlands Ranch, Colorado
Gerald “Fitz” Fitzgibbons was born on 8/31/1939 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Fitz was raised in Chicago and moved to Denver in 1968. He joined the Denver Police Department in 1970. The next 25 years were filled with friendships, brotherhood and excitement where he served the citizens of Denver bravely and with honor. After his retirement from the police department, Fitz went to work for the Teamsters which allowed him to travel the country until 2002. Fitz’s next great and best adventure was raising his daughter Molly. Fitz died on March 3, 2026, and joined his twin angels, Billy and Rosie Fitzgibbons, in heaven. Fitz is survived by his wife Rosie and their daughter Molly, his son Keith and daughter in law Cindy who was more of a daughter than a daughter in law. Fitz will be missed by his grandchildren Hannah (Nic) DeVos, Stacey (Pierre) Etchemendy, Ben (Katie) Fitzgibbons and Jonathan Fitzgibbons. He loved his 8 (soon to be 9) great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Ron (Angela) Schwab.
Fitz lived a life full of adventure, always had a funny story at the ready and lived life his way. His family will miss him dearly and look forward to the day we can see him again.

There will always be good Cops, but we’ll never have better. Rest easy Brother. Bill and Jan
You were my class mate, you were tall and you will light the way for me when I follow.
Rest easy, as you now sit among the angels, brother. My deepest condolences to Rosie and Molly. God bless you.
R.I.P. Big Fitz. You were a good cop and friend, and an absolute blast to work with. S.C.A.T. forever!

RIP Fitz, I will miss talking to you 2 – 3 times week. Good cop and better friend. God bless you and Rosie and Molly!
Great friend and fun to work with when we worked together in SWAT!! I will always remember what a lucky guy you were when you won the Cadillac!! One of a kind and a friendship I will always treasure–rest in peace Big Fitz.
Rest in Peach Fitz! Condolences to the family.
May God Bless Fitz’s family, Rosie, Molly and Keith.
I would like to share a family friendly memory I have of him. Fitz was my partner in the old 122 car. I remember when he got one of the first portable phones (the Brick). He wanted to put phone numbers in the directory but was having trouble with the new technology and asked me if I could help him. I looked at him like he had grown a third eye in the middle of his forehead and told him that while I was flattered I had no idea how they worked. He said he as the car commander (A title that he had self applied)) he was delegating that responsibility to me while he drove. Well I fumbled through it as best I could for a few hours and then returned it to him. He thanked me for my efforts, and I told him not to be to thankful, because with my limited knowledge of these things I might just have entered the nuclear launch codes instead. Fitz could always make you laugh….or grimace depending on your sense of humor, and I will miss that. Farewell Fitzy. You were a great partner and the world’s tallest leprechaun. Regrettably I will be unable to attend his remembrance but I will have a shot of Irish whiskey in his memory. Vaya con Dios my friend.
Fitz, I worked around you several times but never got to work directly with you. You had a great smile, an even better laugh and the best sense of humor of anyone one on the job I knew. And yes you were a big man in size, but really (unless someone really pissed you off) you were a kind, big teddy bear that was a friend to everyone. The world is a dimmer place without you, but heaven is brighter because of you. May you rest in peace.
It’s hard to say farewell to another S.C.A.T. Viking “Big Fitz”. We had so much fun going after the bad guys. You were always a great man and I’ll never forget your grin and that laugh. You always loved being “Big Fitz”. Rest in peace my brother!
A man’s man and a cop’s cop.- a true gentleman. I had the honor to work with FITZ at District One and serving with him on the PPA Board. A gentle giant who always made people feel safe. Thank you for your years of service and always standing up fellow officers. BIG FITZ you will be missed.
