JERRY'S STORY Gerald Dan Romero was born to Chris and Frances Romero on Christmas Eve of 1933. He had two brothers, Chris and Floyd and one sister, Florence. A lifelong Colorado native, he attended school at Swansea Elementary, Cole Junior High and Manual high school. He joined the Air Force and was honorably discharged. He married Patricia Roybal on April 18, 1953 and they were married 63 years. He was a wonderful father to five children, Debra, Patrick, Terrance, Gerald (Jay) Jr., and Michelle. Sadly, he was preceded in death by his parents and sons Patrick and Terrance. He had twelve grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren who loved him dearly. During his lifetime he was a carpenter and even built the first home he purchased in Commerce City. He then became a construction superintendant overseeing the building of many apartment buildings in the Denver metro area. He left the construction field and became the owner of La Mancha Mexican Restaurant. When the restaurant closed he went to work for Volunteers of America as maintenance supervisor for Sunset Park apartments until he "retired". Finding retirement not his cup of tea he went to work at Six Flags Elitch Gardens doing maintenance until he "retired again". He decided he still wasn't ready for retirement and he went to work at Coors Field. One day while working in the basement he collapsed on the floor and struggled for two hours to get himself up off the floor. Not realizing that he had just had a stroke, he then proceeded to let his supervisor know that he was ill and drove himself home. He went to the hospital after displaying some concerning symptoms where it was determined he had suffered a stroke. After a stay in the hospital he was sent for rehabilitation to the Life Care Center of Westminster, where he suffered another stroke and lost the use of his left side. He stayed in the long term care portion of the facility until his death on June 8, 2016 GERALD D. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky. In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there was one only. This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints, so I said to the Lord, "You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there has only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?" The Lord replied, "The years when you have seen only one set of footprints, my child, is when I carried you." ________________________________________ Mary Stevenson, 1936
