Frances was born in Shelton, Nebraska on August 18, 1927 to Victor A. Mortensen and Ada F. Mann Mortensen. She was the fourth of 9 children, her siblings, beginning from first to last, were Lois, Eddie, George, Betty, Mary, Ann, Polly and Johnny. Her mother became ill when Frances was in 8th grade, so she stayed home to help her father and family during her mother’s illness. When her mother died, she never returned to school but continued to care for her family.
She married Carl E. Shafer on March 7, 1950 in North Platte, Nebraska at North Platte Foursquare Church.Carl built her a house in Shelton, NE, where they had and began raising four children, Kay, Jan, Carl Jr., and Scott.
Carl, Sr. was working for Peter Kiewit, so in the early 1960's, the family moved to Colorado, living in Hudson as he helped in the construction of the highway system. He then took a job with Martin Marietta and moved the family to Englewood. They lived in several rental homes, before purchasing the home at 4580 S. Pennsylvania in 1970.
In 1972, Carl passed away and Frances, better known as Frankie, began a new chapter in her life. Not having to drive much, driving became necessary. She took a job with Moore Hansen in Englewood, making bingo cards. She worked for them and continued to work when the company sold to Bingo King Game Enterprises and moved from Englewood to Parker. She retired at the age of 71 after 20 years.
Frances loved her green yard and red house that she lived in for over 50 years. She enjoyed collecting frogs and displayed hundreds of them throughout her home. She was an awesome cook and made delicious lemon meringue pie and peach cobbler, divinity candy at Christmas and the best fried chicken in the world.
Frances loved doing things with her children. They were her life. She influenced other children’s lives too as she was a Sunday School teacher and Den Mother for Cub Scouts. When grandchildren came on the scene, she loved over nighters, spoiling them with donuts for breakfast.
The family was truly blessed by her love. She passed from this life on August 26, 2022. Mom always enjoyed being with family and friends. And I loved listening to her laugh. Deb and I also enjoyed taking mom out for dinner almost every Thursday evening. On my way home from work I would stop and pick her up. Loved my mom a bunch and I will miss her.
My memory of Aunt Frankie is her joy, love of her family, zest for life and great great giggle!!! Sending you cousins my sympathy love and hugs. ️ Kathy Ganz
I was a fortunate person. Mom wasnt my mother-in-law, she was my second mom. From the day I married my best friend Scott, she showered her love on me, treating me as her own. I will cherish the memories of time spent with her; dining out, day trips, picnics at parks; visits on the back patio. Her smile and winks and giggles are forever embedded in my heart.
My mom my best friend. We enjoyed shopping and going out to eat. Setting on the swing in her backyard talking about the day. Laughing and having a good time. She will always be in my heart. Forever Janice.
Thanks for the hugs. I am thankful that you and Nancy came out to see mom a few years ago. Now mom went to visit with Nancy.
Aunt Frankie you were there for me when I needed love and guidance. I will always be grateful for your kindness. I always loved spending the weekends with you and your family. I will miss you and I will see you again someday
Dear mom, you wore us out, and we wore you out, but with the help of God and lots of prayers we made it to the end. Taking care of you was like taking care of the child I never had, it was a pleasure, mom. Even at times it was difficult you hung in there, you were a trooper. You were gracious to open your home to Rick and me, when we needed a helping hand 14 years ago. Then through the years we were there for you, not asking anything in return. We were the lucky ones. We are going to miss you so much. We lost you and a home which we will not be able to come home to again. You will be in our hearts forever, till we meet again. Love Kay and Rick
