Eunice Catherine "Cathy" Vahle

Eunice Catherine (Cathy) Vahle was born on April 24, 1933 in Albuquerque.  She was the first of three children born to Louis and Anita (Bruse) Vahle.  She attended Immanuel Lutheran School through the eighth grade and graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1951.  She was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

After high school she worked briefly for a local furniture store and then secured a bookkeeping position with the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District.  She worked there until her retirement.

On Sept. 16, 1953 she married Stirling Keith Welch, an Airman from Parkston S.D., stationed at Kirtland AFB.  They made their home in Albuquerque 58 years.

Eunice had a lovely soprano voice and she did some solo work, and sang in her church choir as well as the choirs of the University of New Mexico.  She and Keith spent many summers as campground hosts at various sites in the Jemez Mountains.    They also hosted at the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque.

After Keith’s death in 2011 she moved to Denver to be close to her sister and brother.  She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease but did well in assisted living.  She died on June 7 after a short illness having reached the age of 81 years, 1 month and 14 days.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.  She is survived by her brother, Jerry (Lynn); her sister Marion Wilson (Brian); a sister-in-law, Jeanetta Welch of Parkston; 4 nephews and 5 nieces.  

Interment Service is Monday, June 23, 11:15 am at Santa Fe National Cemetery, Area 20.
