Dorothy "Dottie" Heckman

March 4, 1922 ~ October 2, 2016
Dorothy (Dottie) Anita Heckman 3/4/22 - 10/2/2016
Dorothy was born on the farm that her parents homesteaded in the northwest corner of North Dakota . She attended school through the 10th grade in Alkabo, ND then she transferred to Crosby, ND where she graduated from high school. Dorothy enrolled at Minot State Teachers College (in Minot, ND). Her first teaching position was in Ray, ND.
Her "love affair" with Colorado began when she enlisted in the Army / Air Force WAC (Womens Army Coprs) in 1943. She was assigned to Buckley Field (in the Denver area). Her years in the service were a very important part of her life and she was a proud veteran. After her discharge from the armed services, she moved to Washington DC where her older sister lived. During her time in that area, she attended George Washington University. Following graduation, she was employed at the National Institute of Health for a number of years.
In 1954 she began her long career as a 7th & 8th grade science teacher in the Aurora Public Schools. She was so excited to be back in Colorado. Her passion for science and learning motivated her to attend summer school at UNC Greeley, where she completed her Master's Degree. During her teaching career she was very active in Delta Kappa Gamma and was still an active supporter of that group where she made many lifelong friends.
Dorothy was passionate about travelling the world. One of her favorite places was Nova Scotia where her parents were born and many relatives lived. She continued to be very active in retirement years, being involved: at church (ushering and a sewing group), bowling league, delivering meals on wheels, and gardening. An avid reader, her love of reading was instilled in her by her parents. The dedication to teaching brought her out of retirement for a period of time as an instructor at the Aurora Alternative High School.
After selling her much beloved home in Aurora, she moved to the Courtyard at Lakewood where she resided for 16 years. She enjoyed meeting the residents and being a part of the activities. An amazing caring person - with a remarkable memory - she had a constant interest in the lives of all her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph Harris and Stella Heckman, sister Elsie, and brother Kenneth (wife, Palma). Surviving family members are nieces Linda (Bob) Tetrault, JoAnn (Ron) Hansen, nephew James ( Mari) Heckman , several great nieces and nephews, great, great nieces and nephews, and special relatives in Nova Scotia. Burial will be at the Fortuna Cemetery in Fortuna, ND.
