Obituary-Dixie Jean Ponzi: 2/28/48 - 7/14/14 Dixie was born in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Charles "Herbert" White and Juanita McHenry White. She graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1966. In1981, Dixie moved to Denver, Colorado, where she became a practicing Physical Therapist and began working at Lutheran Hospital in Wheatridge. In 1993, she married Jim Ponzi and moved to Aurora, Colorado. Dixie wanted a change and quit working at Lutheran Hospital and became an Activities Director at Cherry Oaks in Denver and later at Epoch in Arapahoe County. She had a special talent for designing and scheduling fun activities for seniors and really enjoyed the work. In 2002 Jim and Dixie moved to Parker, Colorado, and were still living there at the time of her death. Dixie made many friends wherever she lived and worked; she enjoyed watching Bronco games, traveling and playing the slot machines in Blackhawk. An especially fun trip for her was a vacation in New York where she got to accompany Denver Police Brotherhood members and go on the set and meet actors and actresses from a favorite television soap opera. Dixie was preceded in death by both her parents and her brother Herb White. She is survived by her husband Jim and her daughter Shelly Gail, along with her step sons Jim Jr. (Jen), Joseph (Chris) and Matthew. She has 10 grandchildren: Chelsea Graves, Brianna McNurlen, Justin McNurlen, Nicolas, Preston, Cole, and Aiden Ponzi, Austin and Lindsey O'Connor; and one new great granddaughter, Kolby Graves. Please post any memories, pictures or stories about Dixie using the links provided on the Website. God bless all of the people who helped make her six-year battle with cancer a little more tolerable. She was a fighter and will be truly missed by me, her family and all of the people's lives she touched. In closing, a short entreaty that was one her favorite poems and conveys the kind of person that Dixie was: "When I must leave you for a little while, please do not grieve and shed wild tears; And hug your sorrow to you through the years, but start out bravely with a gallant smile; And for my sake and in my name live on and do all things the same; Feed not your loneliness on empty days, but fill each waking hour in useful ways; Reach out your hand in comfort and cheer and I will comfort you and hold you near; And never, never be afraid to die, for I am waiting for you in the sky."
