Charles Coffelt
July 30, 1931 – October 14, 2012
Charles David Joseph Coffelt began his earthly life on July 30, 1931 in Denver. He was the firstborn of Enoch and Mary’s children, which included him brother Tom, and sisters Ann and Judy. He grew up in Englewood and attended St. Louis School, St. Francis de Sales High School and St. Joseph High School. He gained an incredible knowledge of the Denver area, since he rode the streetcars to school. His aptitude of the Denver Grid system was unsurpassed by anyone. As a child he spent his summers caddying at various golf courses (primarily Wellshire) and diving for golf balls with his cousins.
When he was 21, his family moved to Bone Mesa, just north of Hotchkiss, Colorado, where they ran a dairy operation. He enjoyed his time in the Colorado sunshine, looking at cloud formations. It is where he became acquainted with Bernadette Schieber, who taught his sister, Ann. He and Bernadette were married at Sacred Heart Catholic church in Paonia on August 27, 1960.
They returned to Littleton in 1962. Kerstin was born that year and Brennan arrived seven years later. He worked in the Construction business for over 26 years and built a house in Paonia. He also constructed a barn, family room/garage, playhouse, and a porch. At the same time, he was involved in the wholesale pine and aspen tree business. He delivered trees from Aguilar, Colorado to the Denver area.
Charles loved working the soil and returned to farming in Olathe from 1993-2004. Due to health issues (sight impairment); it became impossible for him to continue on the farm. He loved all things agricultural and historical, especially old tractors. His admiration for wildlife was evident, as he loved to care and feed Pearl the Squirrel.
Charles provided well for his family; he never put himself first. He did everything for his children. He was devoted to his mother and visited with his mother every day. His Catholic faith was uppermost in his life and he followed the Golden Rule from live until death.
