Kate Hackim, born Anastasia Sergeyevna Artuskina in Kirov, Russia, passed away unexpectedly on April 29, 2023, at 25 years old.

Kate graduated from Leesville Road High School in Raleigh, North Carolina and attended UNC Chapel Hill where she was studying Neuroscience. Before graduating, Kate elected to take a sabbatical to Colorado to enjoy the atmosphere and vibrancy of the Rocky Mountains. Kate was living in Lakewood, Colorado at the time of her death.

Kate was a bright light everywhere she went and in every group she was part of. Her kindness towards her friends and family had no limits. Kate loved adventure, people, and animals most of all. She was an incredibly talented artist and writer. Kate loved her job, coworkers, and patients at Colorado Ophthalmology Associates at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood.

She is survived by her mother, Jennifer Hackim, and father, Ed Hackim, of Durham, North Carolina; brothers Eddie Hackim, of Athens, Ohio, and Jacob Hackim, of Cary, North Carolina; grandparents, Chuck and Ann Freeman, of Colfax, North Carolina; dogs Phoebe and Sasha; cats Mishka and Basil; her aunts, uncles, and cousins; and her boyfriend Jace Brandl and their cat Boo, of Lakewood, Colorado. Kate is preceded in death by her grandparents, Jim and Eleanor Hackim, of Sanford, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Foothills Animal Shelter. A celebration of life event will be scheduled at a later date in North Carolina. https://foothillsanimalshelter.org

Kate is now at peace. She was loved immeasurably. She will be missed infinitely.

Guestbook

  1. There really aren't words sufficient enough to describe just what you meant to me and the rest of the family. The time, laughs, and memories shared with you will always be held closely. 6. Jen, my heart breaks for you and your family. I hope that all of the wonderful memories of Kate will bring you peace and comfort. I have seen and felt the enormous love that you have for Kate, and know that it will help you carry on and be a light for you and your family always.

  7. Jen and Ed, I am so deeply sorry. Words can never do it justice. My family sends our love, prayers, and wishes for calm and comfort to you all.

  8. What can you say to ease the pain of a tragedy like this?

Words can't convey the loss. They fall pitifully short.

It is like a part of you has been ripped away. The scar will never heal. You have to wear it the rest of your life.

If Kate could speak, she would thank Ed and Jennifer for her life and all they did for her. I'm sure they feel the same way about her.

Though I never met her, my heart still breaks. We only get the time we get. Life is not fair. May her memory be an eternal blessing
