Byron Huber

August 1, 1923 ~ July 23, 2007
Byron Huber spent much of his life getting things from one place to another. "Speed" was his nickname, one he earned in his younger days when his round trips on gasoline deliveries took half the time of his coworkers. Not satisfied with merely driving the trucks himself, "Speed" decided to take the whole process under his control and became the Denver area operator of P.I.E., Bulk Commodities Division, he then founded Road Runner Inc. Sand and Gravel Company and Western Tankliners with numerous trucks delivering petroleum products throughout the western United States. Byron retired from business in 1982.
Born in Elizabeth, Colorado, Byron was the second child of Joseph and Mildred Huber. He grew up in Derby, Colorado with his mother and sister Maysel (Pferdesteller), following the departure of his father when Byron was young. After attending Adams City High School Byron went to work in the oil and trucking businesses.
In 1963 Byron married his wife of 44 years Gloria Hutchings, also adopting Gloria's daughter Michelle. Three more children followed: Scot, Christie and Craig.
Byron and Gloria loved to travel and did so extensively. Hawaii and Mexico were favorite destinations but they visited many other places including most (if not all) of the 50 states, often with the kids in the car. China was one of their more exotic destinations (while cruising the "South China Seas"). Others included: the Caribbean and many places in Europe including a crossing on the QEII with a return on the Concorde.
As the children grew older, grandchildren arrived and Byron loved visiting and getting visits from his grandchildren. Byron has eight grandchildren, Christopher and Sean Regan, Grant and Grace Huber, Parker, Paige and Preston Althen, and Ashley Huber.
Byron was a longtime member of Wellshire Presbyterian Church and other organizations in the Denver area.
A generous man all of his life Byron hoped that, in lieu f flowers, donations might be made in his memory to the Denver Chapter of the American Cancer Society, the Denver Hospice or the Wellshire Presbyterian Church Sanctuary Choir.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 1st at Wellshire Presbyterian Church, 2999 South Colorado Blvd, Denver, CO.
