May 24, 1928 – June 26, 2026
Austin Ignatius Gomes, the eldest son of ten children born to Victor Clement Gomes and
Eugenie Gomes, entered the world in Georgetown, British Guiana, South America.
Growing up among five sisters and five brothers, he learned early the values of
responsibility, family, and perseverance.
Austin was preceded in death by his beloved wife Sheila and cherished son David.
Austin is lovingly remembered by his children:
Linda Whitmarsh (Rick), Margaret Uncapher (Patrick), Kathy Jenkins (David), Anne
Reker (Ricky), and Michelle Schueller (Jeff).
His legacy continues through his grandchildren:
Christopher Whitmarsh, Eric Whitmarsh, Erin Hurlock, Kyle Uncapher, Jennifer
Jenkins, Alyssa Jenkins, Joshua Gomes, Jessica Gomes, Ryan Schueller, and Megan
Bateman.
And through his great-grandchildren:
Izzy Bellino, Clayton Whitmarsh, Dylan Gomes, Jackson Gomes, Cooper Sketch, Cami
Sketch, Matthew Schueller, Owen Schueller, Tristan, and Andrew.
From a young age, Austin embraced athletics. At 16, he began competing in organized
sports, discovering a lifelong passion for physical activity and mentorship. Tennis became
his greatest joy — both playing and teaching. His dedication earned him the title of Senior
Champion in the Senior Tennis Tournament in Englewood, a highlight of his sporting life.
Austin’s commitment to his community was deep and enduring. He served on the
Englewood Parks & Recreation Commission, where he was appointed Chairman and
held that role for 21 years, shaping programs and opportunities that enriched the lives of
countless residents.
His faith was a cornerstone of his life. For more than 60 years, Austin was a devoted
member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Englewood. He served in many roles — usher,
Men’s Club member, Knights of Columbus, Finance Committee member — and faithfully
ran Bingo for 40 years, becoming a beloved presence in the parish community.
Austin’s life was defined by service, family, faith, and a genuine love for people. His
kindness, humor, and steady presence touched everyone who knew him. His legacy lives
on in the communities he strengthened and the family he cherished.
