Marillyn Catherine Toombs
Marillyn Catherine Toombs passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on January 26, 2016 in her Meridian Retirement Community in Denver, Colorado, after a short illness. She was born on July 26, 1920 in Seattle, Washington to her parents Edwin and Emma Anderson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Kenneth Anderson and her husband Eugene Victor Toombs. She will be missed by her sons and their families, Kenneth (Terrie) Toombs of Denver, Colorado and Larry (Julie) Toombs of Miami, Florida; grandchildren Aaron Toombs, Emily McCloud, Nicholas Toombs, Josie McCloud, Brooks McCloud, Cash Toombs, Max Toombs and Ava Zeh.
After a childhood in Seattle, Marillyn graduated from Western Washington College with a degree in Education and started her career teaching elementary school in Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands during World War II. She married her husband Eugene Victor Toombs in June 1945 and they moved to Bakersfield, California where he worked in the oil industry. After giving birth to two sons and raising them to school age, she resumed her career teaching elementary school for 25 years in the Standard School District in Oildale (North Bakersfield.)
Throughout her life Marillyn made new friends through her talkative personality and her sincere interest in the life stories of others. Her friends' lives were touched by her kindness and compassion and she was beloved by all those whose lives crossed with hers.
Marillyn maintained an active life in retirement through her involvement with educational causes and her Lutheran Church activites. She moved to the Meridian Retirement Community in the Denver area in March 2006 to be closer to family and enriched their lives with her presence until her passing. Marillyn was blessed to live to see her great grandchildren, who were a source of joy to her spirit to her final days.
Marillyn will be remembered and missed as a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and by all the friends whose lives she touched.
Funeral Services:
Colorado- Memorial and Celebration of Life Service will be held on February 5th, 2016, in the Sky Room at the Meridian Englewood. 3455 S. Corona St., Englewood, CO 80113
California- A viewing will be held the evening of February 24th, 2016. Graveside services and burial will be February 25th, 2016, Greenlawn Cemetery, 3700 River Blvd. Bakersfield, CA 93305.
