With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved family matriarch, Lucy (Lulu) Manzanares, who left us on February 2, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on June 25, 1931, to Thomas Mendoza and Helen Martinez in Fort Morgan, CO, Lucy lived a life rich with love, grace, faith, and a touch of sass. She was the heart and soul of our family, a wonderful cook who created unforgettable meals. Her cooking was legendary—no one could make her special meals quite like she could. She believed that food was a way to nurture not only the body but also the soul, and everyone who came to her house sat at her table and left with both a full stomach and a full heart.
Her father, Thomas Mendoza, lovingly gave her the nickname “Lulu” when she was a little girl, and those who knew her felt the warmth and love it represented.
A deeply faithful woman, Lucy’s love for God was woven through every part of her life. She sang hymns with joy, filling her home with her sweet voice in praise and prayer. Her faith in God and the importance of family guided her every step, and she shared that unwavering belief with all who knew her. Her infectious smile and sharp wit made her the heartbeat of our family, always guiding us with wisdom, love, and laughter.
Lucy’s laughter, sassy remarks, and heartfelt hugs left lasting memories for everyone fortunate enough to be in her presence. Her legacy of faith, love, and laughter will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched.
She is survived by her children: Danny Padilla, Diane Santistevan, Jacqueline Chavez, William (Romey) Manzanares Jr., and Mark (Lorraine) Manzanares; her siblings: Everett Mendoza (deceased), Milito Mendoza (deceased), Bonny (Flora) Mendoza (deceased), Pete Mendoza (deceased), Helen Schroeder (deceased), Gavino Mendoza (deceased), Balvina Mendoza (deceased), Susan Marquez, Adriana (Harry) Elenbaas, Josephine (Nick) Romero, Thomas (Patricia) Mendoza (deceased), Christine Brookerson, Gracie Mendoza (deceased), and Juanita West; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family who will always cherish her love, laughter, and faith.
Lucy is now reunited with her loving husband, William Manzanares, and is at peace with those who went before her, including her cherished granddaughter, Selene Ortega.
Rest in peace, Mom/Grandma Lulu. Your love, faith, and light will remain in our hearts forever. We love you always.
